Now that you've reached the “finish line” and you've retired, you might feel as though your retirement requires no further planning. But the truth is that you should continue to assess your retirement, adjust your goals, and make continue planning for the rest of your life. Once you have been retired for a year or two, ask yourself these questions. Then, revisit them every few years to ensure that you're enjoying your retirement to the max. Are you living the life you had pictured? Hopefully, you transitioned smoothly from your working years into your dream retirement lifestyle. But if not, why?
Has anything changed over the first year or two of retirement? Sometimes we throw ourselves into all types of activities in the beginning of retirement, only to realize after a few months or years that we don't really enjoy those things anymore. That's okay! It's normal for priorities to shift. You can always move along to something else, but if money is stopping you from enjoying life, then we should schedule a talk. What would you like to change? Retirement rarely works out exactly as we picture it. Is there anything you would like to change? What has surprised you about retirement? Most of us will face at least one major surprise in retirement. It could be a health crisis, a major lifestyle change, or a sharp rise or drop in the stock market. If this big surprise has affected your finances, don't wait for everything to fall into place. Be proactive, and take the steps to ensure that your financial plan is still solvent. If you haven't experienced any surprises, reassess your financial plan anyway, and make sure you are always ready for an emergency. Is your plan flexible? Have you created a Plan A (your dream retirement) and a Plan B (a backup plan in case something doesn't work out)? Are you locked into certain decisions, or have you left room for change? As you move forward, allow yourself to continue reassessing your goals. If you need help adjusting your plan, we're here for you! Call our office to schedule an appointment. We would be happy to listen to your thoughts on retirement, and help you formulate a new plan if you want to make some changes. Comments are closed.
